Defibrillators for the Home
A home defibrillator is easy to use, safe and affordable to buy, and could benefit you, your family and neighbours should the unthinkable happen! It is a sadly shocking statistic that Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)
kills over 2000 people a week in the UK alone.
At least 12 of these will be young people.
80% of these arrests occur out of hospital.
The known risk factors for SCA parallel those of Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), and include being older than 45 years of age, high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and inactivity. Emotional stress has also been shown to be a trigger for sudden cardiac events.
The role of activity as a trigger for SCA may be minimal, though this continues to be debated. In some cases exercise may precipitate an attack, yet in a study of SCA in Holland, 67% of victims were physically inactive at the time of the event.
There are however many other causes of SCA which may go undetected.
Unfortunately SCA may be the first symptom of CHD and other cardiac problems.
In other words, SCA can strike anyone, at any time, in any place.
The only effective treatment for SCA is defibrillation with an Automated External Defibrillator(AED) within 4-6 minutes as part of the chain of survival. The chance of surviving an SCA decreases by approximately 10% for every minute that passes following an attack, so that after 10 minutes the survival rate is almost nil.
In the UK, the average response time of emergency services is greater than 10 minutes which means that even if they are called, without early access to an AED the chances of survival are negligible.
To have the best chance of survival, every home should have an AED. With prices for a home AED costing less than 40p a day, and with their operation being so simple they can be operated by a child. It will not shock if a shock is not required.
Can you really afford to be without one?
